Self Administration of medication by competent individuals is encouraged. The HSW may be required to “assist” with administration by reminding the client to take their medications and providing some water.
If a client is NOT capable of self administering and the family is not able to assist, Provincial Homecare will ensure that Home Support Workers receive appropriate training and ongoing supervision to the perform the task. This would be considered a Delegation of Nursing Function.
Any medication delivered via a needle (Insulin, Vit B12) HAS to be delegated by a Registered Nurse.
If there are medications in the home, a Medication Profile Sheet should be in the home and kept update to date.
